What Was FileMaker Mobile?

August 28, 2026

FileMaker Mobile was a companion product that allowed FileMaker users to take selected database information with them on early handheld devices.

Introduced in 2000, the first version worked with Palm OS devices. Later releases also supported Microsoft Pocket PC. Users could transfer selected fields and records from a FileMaker Pro database to a handheld device, work with that information while away from their computer, and synchronize the changes when they returned.

Today, these capabilities may sound ordinary. At the time, they were anything but.

FileMaker data before the smartphone era

FileMaker Mobile appeared years before the iPhone, the App Store, widespread mobile internet access, and modern cloud platforms.

The typical mobile device was a Palm handheld or Pocket PC with a small screen, limited memory, modest processing power, and little or no permanent internet connection. Applications had to be compact, focused, and capable of working independently from the desktop computer.

Within those constraints, FileMaker Mobile made an important promise: business data did not have to remain on an office computer.

A salesperson could carry customer information. A technician could consult or update records in the field. An employee could collect structured data away from the company network and synchronize it later.

FileMaker Mobile did not run a complete FileMaker application in the way that FileMaker Go does today. It created a streamlined mobile database containing the selected information required by the user. Its strength was not graphical sophistication, but the ability to make useful business data portable.

A technology ahead of its time

FileMaker Mobile anticipated several ideas that later became fundamental to professional mobile applications:

  • Access to business data in the field
  • Offline data entry
  • Synchronization with a central system
  • Interfaces adapted to smaller devices
  • Selection of only the information required by the mobile user
  • Continuity between desktop and mobile workflows

These concepts now appear in countless cloud services and smartphone apps. FileMaker users were already exploring them at the beginning of the century.

The technology belonged to a very different generation of devices, but the business need it addressed has never disappeared. Organizations still want employees to access and update reliable information wherever their work takes place.

From FileMaker Mobile to FileMaker Go

The arrival of the iPhone and iPad created a radically different mobile environment. In 2010, FileMaker Go brought FileMaker custom apps to iOS, offering an experience much closer to the complete FileMaker platform.

FileMaker Mobile and FileMaker Go should therefore not be confused. FileMaker Mobile synchronized a simplified selection of data with early handheld devices. FileMaker Go runs FileMaker custom apps on the iPhone and iPad and can connect directly to hosted FileMaker files.

Yet FileMaker Mobile deserves to be remembered. Long before “mobile-first,” offline synchronization, and digital field operations became common expressions, it gave FileMaker developers a practical way to put business information into people’s pockets.

The same ambition, a new generation of tools

The devices have changed, but the objective remains familiar: giving each user access to the right information, through the right interface, wherever it is needed.

Today, fmcloud.fm helps organizations achieve this using FileMaker Go, FileMaker WebDirect, Claris Studio, APIs, offline architectures, and securely hosted FileMaker applications.

FileMaker Mobile belongs to the history of the platform. The vision behind it — making custom business applications genuinely mobile — is more relevant than ever.
