In the FileMaker ecosystem, Linux is one of the operating systems on which FileMaker Server can run.
Its importance goes far beyond adding another choice to Windows and macOS. Linux changed how FileMaker Server could be deployed, automated, hosted, and operated at scale.

FileMaker Server comes to Linux
For many years, FileMaker Server was available only for Windows Server and macOS.
Claris introduced an official Linux version of FileMaker Server in the FileMaker 19 generation. The first releases supported CentOS Linux, a distribution widely used for servers and enterprise hosting.
This gave FileMaker administrators access to an operating system designed around command-line administration, automation, remote deployment, and standardized server infrastructure.
It also removed the cost and operational constraints of maintaining a Windows or macOS installation for every FileMaker Server.
From CentOS to Ubuntu
CentOS underwent a major strategic change when the traditional CentOS Linux distribution was replaced by CentOS Stream.
Claris subsequently moved FileMaker Server Linux support toward Ubuntu Server, which is now the supported Linux platform for current versions of FileMaker Server.
CentOS therefore has historical importance in the FileMaker ecosystem: it was the distribution that opened the Linux era for FileMaker Server. Ubuntu is the platform on which that strategy continues.
Organizations still running an old CentOS-based FileMaker Server should plan an upgrade rather than treating the operating system as a permanent platform.
Why Linux matters for FileMaker hosting
Linux is well suited to repeatable server deployment.
Installation and administration can be automated using scripts and command-line tools. Configuration can be standardized across many machines, and monitoring can be integrated with established infrastructure platforms.

FileMaker Server is still FileMaker Server
Running on Linux does not change the purpose of FileMaker Server.
It continues to host .fmp12 files and provide access through FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Go, WebDirect, OData, the Data API, and Custom Web Publishing.
The main differences concern installation, operating-system administration, paths, permissions, system scripts, plug-ins, drivers, and the web server used by the deployment.
A FileMaker developer does not generally need to understand Linux administration to use a hosted application. The operating system becomes important for the people responsible for installing, securing, updating, and monitoring FileMaker Server.
Current Linux web servers
Current FileMaker Server installations on Linux include Nginx and Apache. Nginx is the default, while FileMaker Server can be switched to Apache when required.
These web servers provide the HTTP and HTTPS layer used by WebDirect, APIs, Custom Web Publishing, container delivery, and Admin Console.
