Claris Studio is a cloud-based development environment created by Claris to build responsive web experiences around business data.
However, Claris announced on August 27, 2026, that Claris Studio is being discontinued. The service will remain available to existing users until March 15, 2027, after which it will be shut down.
Claris Studio should therefore no longer be considered for new projects. Organizations currently using it should begin planning how their applications and data will be migrated.
What was Claris Studio designed to do?
Claris Studio was introduced as part of the wider Claris platform, alongside FileMaker, Claris Connect, and FileMaker Cloud.
Its purpose was to make it easier to create responsive web interfaces for collecting, displaying, and sharing business data. These interfaces could be used from computers, tablets, and smartphones without requiring users to install FileMaker Pro.
Claris Studio organized information into different types of views, including:
- Forms
- Spreadsheets
- Lists
- Dashboards
- Kanban boards
- Calendars
- Galleries
- Timelines
Views could be grouped into hubs and shared with named users or, in some cases, made publicly accessible. A typical use could be a registration form, customer portal, internal directory, dashboard, or web interface connected to an existing business application.
How did Claris Studio relate to FileMaker?
Claris Studio was intended to complement FileMaker rather than replace it.
FileMaker Pro remained the environment for building complete custom applications with database structures, layouts, scripts, calculations, security, and complex business workflows. Claris Studio provided a simpler way to expose selected data and processes through responsive web pages.
Studio could use its own native tables and was later extended to work with data hosted by compatible versions of FileMaker Server and FileMaker Cloud.
The underlying idea was attractive: FileMaker would remain the central business application, while Claris Studio could provide lightweight web experiences for customers, suppliers, employees, and other occasional users.
Why is Claris Studio being discontinued?
According to Claris, adoption of Claris Studio increased, but not quickly enough to justify the level of continued investment required.
Claris also acknowledged that the market for web application development had changed rapidly. Generative AI and new application-building tools made it increasingly difficult for Claris Studio to establish a sustainable advantage.
The company has therefore decided to concentrate its development resources on its core strengths, particularly:
- Claris FileMaker
- Agentic and AI-assisted development
- Platform stability and reliability
- Security and performance
- Claris Connect
The discontinuation concerns Claris Studio, not FileMaker. Claris continues to invest in FileMaker and has presented FileMaker 2026 as the foundation for future agentic development capabilities.
What should existing Claris Studio users do?
Existing Claris Studio environments can continue operating until March 15, 2027. Nevertheless, applications that need to remain available beyond that date will have to be replaced or migrated.
There is no single replacement suitable for every Studio project. The appropriate solution depends on what the application does, who uses it, where its data is stored, and how closely it is connected to FileMaker.
Possible alternatives may include:
- FileMaker WebDirect for accessing a FileMaker custom app through a web browser
- FileMaker Go for native access on iPhone and iPad
- A custom web application connected through the FileMaker Data API
- An application using OData
- External forms or web services connected through Claris Connect
- A dedicated customer or partner portal developed around the existing FileMaker application
The important point is to begin with the business process, not with the choice of a replacement technology. A public form, an internal dashboard, and a customer portal may all require very different migration strategies.
